Following the recent strike action embarked upon by National Association of Resident Doctors Nationwide, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) yesterday went wild in a peaceful and well orchestrated protest to press home their demands. The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) branch of NANNM led by their lively Chairman, Comrade Elizabeth Oragba occupied the entire hospital and later, the state secretariat of the association along Father Hunter Street, Nyiman Layout Makurdi, chanting solidarity songs and praying warfare prayers in line with their demands that included:

1.       Nonpayment of skipping arrears to deserving nurses
2.       Selective payment of relativity arrears to other health professionals and exclusion of nurses
3.       Nonpayment of teaching allowances to CONHESS 7 & 8
4.       Nonpayment of promotion arrears for over four years
5.       Promotion from CONHESS 11 to 11, 12 and 13 to 13
6.       Nonpayment of uniform allowance as ordained by the civil service rules and
7.       Non availability of medical consumables amongst others

At the FMC, the Chief Medical Director Dr. Inunduh Peter, lauded the consistent patience of the nurses and pledged his continuous support in ensuring their entitlements are well met. Similarly, The State Chairman of NANNM Comrade Okpai Esther commended the unflinching efforts of nurses at all levels and urged them to keep the fire alive until all their demands are brought home. The nurses in their numbers displayed various inscriptions displaying their demands in different bits. Just like their Doctor counterparts, a warning strike are therefore imminent that will spell doom to the ill at various public hospitals. We hope and pray their demands are met to avoid the loss of lives that such an action may cause.
